Bring on the battens!!!!

I laid out the battens to see if I could avoid outlets and switches, while covering all the board seams. No such luck. Fortunately, the cuts were easy.

Here is a sneak peak since I am not officially done with installing all the battens.

I changed the spacing so therefore, will need to run out and get some more. More wood, more cutting, and more painting... this project is never ending....

My husband asked me the other day whether or not I regretted taking on this very intensive project. Now that I am so nearing the end, it is getting me excited about the next best part of the room, decorating!! However, will need to build a bed first.

Creative solutions

I love happy mistakes. I accidentally didn't buy a piece of board on the back wall. Instead of rushing out to buy one, I decided to use my left over scraps. I had 9 extra pieces to work with. I decided to place one on top of another. However, there was a three inch gap in between.

Therefore, I decided to place two pieces of moulding in between. The 2.5 inch spare I used for the window trim and a 1" scrap that I turned side ways to get the other 1/2 inch. This filled my three inch gap perfectly.

I think it adds a little more character to the wall.

As I stared at that wall, I decided to do something a little different with the top half. I painted the bottom half, but you'll have to wait to see if what I envisioned makes it to the wall. If it doesn't turn out great, I'll just paint it white. Of course, I have to make my life a little more difficult with yet another idea!

I'm am so ready for this project to be over. I'm sure you are tired of reading it by now.

Moulding!!!

Moulding is cut, nailed and painted. Doesn't it look pretty?

My vision is starting to come to light and I love it. I do admit, I still have 3 pieces of moulding left to cut and put up, but I have to figure out the angles and I am too tired right now to do that. Why can't everything be 45 degrees???

The board seams will be covered by the battens which will have to wait for another day. I am so satisfied with how it is turning out. What do you think?

Trimming the window

One of the most intimidating things for me is taking apart something that looks perfectly fine. Okay, so this picture is a little dark, but it depicts a perfectly fine window. So what's the problem? I want to trim out the window. I want the top and bottom moulding to match. Therefore, I have to somehow get rid of the bottom piece of moulding.

I'm not one for destruction. I'm more of a fixer-upper kind of gal, however, give me an idea I want to execute and it shall get done.

Thanks to my little putty knife, I removed that piece. It broke while doing so.

Trimming the window wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Add a little paint and everything looks a lot nicer.

Do you notice a piece of panel missing? It's the last piece I need to cut out, but it's late and I really don't want to wake the neighbors so that will have to wait till another day. Will have to get a little jiggy with the jigsaw to get that cut to happen. So, not looking forward to it.

Boarding the Board and Battan Project

The ice finally melted from the roads so I was able to pick up the boards for the walls. I can't wait to paint them white.

After I paint them, I will nail the battans onto the boards 12 inches apart to cover up the seams.

The hardest part was measuring out the holes for all the outlets.

If it weren't for these, I would be completely done with the boarding process already. I plan on painting the boards this weekend. I am so excited.

Snow + Sleet = Snow Day!

All the schools were cancelled so I stayed home to take care of the kiddos. It is definitely not like me to stay home from work because of weather. I have never missed a day of work because of snow or sleet, but here I am, missing my first day in 9 years.

You know what that means? Project! I bought the battans (for the board and batten project) after work yesterday and was planning on painting them after I placed them on the wall, but after reading several blogs saying it was a big mistake to not at least prime them beforehand, I decided to go ahead and paint them.

I started priming before the kiddos even woke up this morning (I'm an early bird where 6:00 is sleeping in for me).

It took about two coats of paint to get full coverage.

After painting what seemed like a million sticks, I was happy with the results. No dripping off the walls, no having to stand and squat, and no having to get paint into every single crevice. Painting beforehand was definitely a great idea.

I was hoping to pick up the boards for the walls today, but seeing how there is a nice layer of sleet and the wind chill making it feel like 3 degrees outside, I may just have to hold that thought for a warmer day.

Inspirational Board and Battan

I was reading on Imperfect, how Emily decorated her son's room with board and batten.

I saw this picture and was so inspired. As soon as I am done with studying for my test, this is going to the top of my to-do list for R.'s room.

Another inspiration room with board and batten.

Love.
