Rainbow Layered Jello

The most popular thing at the party was none other than this 11 layered rainbow jello treat.

11 layered Rainbow Jello Squares
6 packages JELLO (3oz each) -
strawberry, orange, lemon, lime, berry blue, and grape
8 1/2 envelopes KNOX unflavored gelatin
1 can of sweetened condensed milk (14 oz)

You can use any flavor that you wish. I chose the flavors based upon the color.

Here is what the Knox Gelatine looks like. Look on the top shelf of your grocery store.

Mix the can of condensed milk with 1 3/4 cup hot water. I microwaved the water in a pyrex cup for 3 minutes to get it to boil. Set aside.

Mix 2 1/2 envelopes Knox gelatine with 1 1/4 cup hot water

Combine with milk mixture and set aside

Combine Grape JELLO, 1 envelope Knox gelatine and 1-1/2 cups hot water. Cool, then pour into a 9×13 pyrex and a 10x10 pyrex square. Place in the freezer for 15 minutes or until firm. Now would be a great time to get your next layer (Blue Raspberry) ready so that it will be cool enough to pour over when ready.

Pour a layer of the milk mixture on top of the grape JELLO. I didn't measure out how much I poured, but just eye balled it. Freeze to set.

Next pour the blue layer and then prepare the green layer...

Pour the milk mixture over the blue layer ...followed by pouring the green layer while preparing the yellow layer...

...repeat, you get the idea... continue until you get to the last layer, the red layer.

Note: If the milk mixture starts to gel, I found that putting it in the microwave for 10 seconds liquifies it again, but doesn't make it overly warm to pour on top. When done, your layers look like this:

Pretty or what? ...and don't you say what.

Cut the jello into squares. Use your fingers to pull the jello from the edges and they should come right out.

Plate and serve.

The kiddos (me included) loved to peel each layer off and eat individually.

I absolutely loved how they turned out.

I definitely will make this recipe again.

Can't you see this with different colors for different holidays?

  1. Wow! Wow! and Wow! That turned out AWESOME! It looks so perfect! Okay, I'm going to try this. Going to go to the store today and see if I can perfect it like you did! Kudos!

  2. Thank you for this recipe!! I've been looking for a cute rainbow jello idea for DD's 1st bday, and a lot of the other ones out there only have a few layers. Just to confirm, you used two pans, right? I don't have a 10x10, but hopefully an 8x11 will be close enough. :)

  3. I only used a 10x10 because that is what I had. Using 2 8x11 will make it easier to transport into the freezer.

  6. Oh, and how long do you think you could make this in advance? Concerned about colors bleeding, but maybe that'd be a cool effect...?

  7. Lauren, I think you can make it a couple of days in advance if you had to. I didn't have any problems with colors bleeding into each other. It still looked good. Since, an extra package of gelatine was added, the jello stayed firm.

  8. My friend makes the exact same layered dish... but she makes the "adult" version!!! Different flavored alcohol in each layer!!! It is AWESOME!!!

  9. Just curious you say to use two pans but I only see the result in one the 10x10, do you use two because their is too much volume in this recipoe??

    1. If you look closely, there are 2 pyrex containers shown in the 8th picture. The amount of jello made should fit two pyrex containers as described above. If you don't want to make as much, you can use a few number of colors (4 instead of 7), but I find that if you simply decrease the amount you use for each particular color, the layering effect may not be shown with such detail.

  10. I have made this for the holidays for years, now my kids aren't happy if we don't have it. I make mine with sour cream and only use one pan. Once the layers start jelling it goes really fast and doesn't take long to make. Everyone loves it and think it takes hours to make.

  12. Does it taste better or worse if you used sour cream instead of condensed milk?

    1. I've never tried it with sour cream so I wouldn't know. Let me know if you try it.

  13. Can this be done without the milk layer and still work? I am having my son's party and have a friend coming whose son is allergic to dairy. Thank you!

    1. You can and I've tried that, but the colors are not distinct. They run into each other like a spectrum because they are so translucent. It still tastes just as yummy though.

    1. I used a 10x10 and a 9x13. It is super easy to cut out. Once you cut it, the center pieces come out immediately. The sides take a little wiggling, but it is easy. Good luck!

  15. Can I use a bundt pan and flip the entire mold? And will the milk that's waiting to be used thicken or only when it's frozen?

    1. I am not sure how well it will come out of a bundt pan. I've never tried it. The milk will eventually thicken because it has gelatine incorporated in it.

  17. So no need to spray your pyrex with cooking spray before adding the first layer of jello?

  18. for how many people is this made for approximately

    1. This recipe makes quite a few. I was able to have 36 pieces just for my 10x10 inch pan. It all depends on how big of the pieces you cut.

  19. is it okay to use 2 9x13 instead of 1 10x10 and 1 9x13? How long does this take to make?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can use 2 9x13, but just know that your layers will be thinner because there is more surface area to cover. I would say this could easily take 2 hours from start to finish because of the waiting times in the freezer. It is not a quick recipe, but the final result amazes kids and adults alike.

  20. Can you make it without the condense milk? Only because I only make things that are lactose free.

    1. You can absolutely make it without the condense milk layer. I've done it before. However, the colors of the rainbow will not be as distinct because they are see through and therefore the yellow, for example would look orangy yellow at one angle and greenish yellow at another. Totally doable, just not as rainbowy (if that is even a word :) )

  21. when you add the milk layer, you you immoderately add the next color? or does it need to freeze first?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Elly, you need to freeze the milk layer first so that it doesn't mix with the jello. It freezes rather quickly.

  22. When you add the milk layer, do you immediately add the next color ? or freeze first?
After the last Layer? how long do I wait to cut the shapes?
If I want to do only 3 colors but double the size, Do I also double the Knox gelatin?
    Thanks

    1. You need to wait until the milk layer solidifies so you need to refreeze. Since everything, but the last color is solid, you don't have to wait too long before cutting the shapes. When the last layer is solid, you can cut into shapes. I think that you should have the same ratio of jello to knox gelatin. Therefore, if you double the color, you should double the gelatin so that it is solid enough to cut through.
